Generic name – Cyproheptadine

Peritol is used to increase appetite in anorexia of different genesis. This medicine is extremely useful for those who would like to gain weight but have problems to do so.

Pharmacological Effects:
It is a H1-histamine receptor Blocker. Peritol has an antiallergic effect and is most pronounced in itching dermatoses. Also it possesses anticholinergic and sedative effects, stimulates appetite, inhibits hypersecretion of growth hormone (with acromegaly) and ACTH (Cushing’s syndrome).

Indications:

Allergic reactions (hives, hay fever, allergic dermatitis, vasomotor rhinitis, serum sickness, angioedema), prevention of allergic reactions (including blood transfusions), skin diseases (dermatitis, toxicoderma, atopic dermatitis, eczema), loss of appetite, chronic pancreatitis (part of complex treatment), migraine.

Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity, angle-closure glaucoma, benign prostatic hyperplasia, a predisposition to edema, urinary retention, pregnancy, lactation, infancy (up to 6 months).

Side effects:
Drowsiness, anxiety, ataxia, visual hallucinations, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, nausea, rash. Overdose.

Symptoms:
Children – excitation, hallucinations, athetosis, convulsions, mydriasis and immobility of the pupils, facial flushing, hyperthermia, vascular collapse, coma.
Adult – lethargy, depression, psychomotor agitation, convulsions, coma, rarely – hyperthermia, hyperemia of the skin.

Interaction:
Enhances the effect of narcotic analgesics, anxiolytics. Strengthens the M-anticholinergic effect and interacts with tricyclic antidepressants. The drug is incompatible with ethanol. Caffeine and amphetamine reduce the drugs effect on CNS. With simultaneous administration of hypnotics and sedatives drugs overall central depressive effect is increased.
