Specific Zyrtec Warnings and Precautions
Zyrtec, known as an effective medication which treats allergy symptoms, has gained more and more popularity among people suffering from seasonal and non-seasonal allergies. However, it should be remembered that there are situations in which Zyrtec should not be taken, or should be taken with caution in order to avoid all the adverse reactions.
Let’s view these situations more detailed:
- In spite of the fact that Zyrtec does not belong to the sedating antihistamines, it can still cause significant drowsiness in some people. Therefore, do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know your reaction to the drug.
- It is not recommended to take alcohol while being on Zyrtec, since using them together can lead to the severe drowsiness.
- If you suffer from liver or kidney disease, your body may not react to the drug as well as it should. Check with your health care provider before taking Zyrtec, as you may need a lower dosage.
- The label of Zyrtec suggests that people age 65 and older should consult with their health care providers before taking the drug in order to establish the best dose for them taking into account the age and everything connected with their health state at the moment. Usually physicians prescribe a lower dosage of Zyrtec for people age 65 and older.
- Zyrtec was defined as a pregnancy Category B medication. This means that it is probably safe for use during pregnancy, although all the risks are not currently known.
- It has not been found out if Zyrtec passes through breast milk in humans. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, discuss this issue with your physician before taking the medication.
